Being prepared in the back country is the most important part of enjoying it. Avalanches have more power then you or i realize watching them on TV. They are fast and violent. For your saftey make sure when you venture out into the back country that you have at least these things. First, your beacon or avalanche transceiver. This in many situations is the only way your friends are going to be able to find you. Second, your probe. Once we locate you we need to find out exactly were you are at in the massive pile of snow so the probe is the only way of doing it. Shovel, you will not be able to get anything done as an avalanche will set up like concrete so just image using your hands to fix that isn't going to get you very far. Fourth, a pack. Have these on your person at all times when in the back country. Be safe out there.
