The manufacturers discription does this bag no justice. one would actually have to fill it with all their crap to truly realize how much it can hold. it is 6" in depth, however, this is simply for normal books and documents. The laptop pocket folds out when in use for an extra 2 or so inches in depth. Under the flap is where the laptop rests in its padded strapped down poutch. outside of that poutch lies a plethora of pockets and poutches for pens, PDA's and whatever else. Unless you are getting a bag specificly for your monster sized laptop (larger than 17"W, 12"L, 2"D) This bag should be quite adequate for most all personal and office uses.
